Getting a tattoo is more than just an appointment — it’s a collaboration between you and your artist to create something permanent. Your role begins as soon as you leave the studio. The way you care for your tattoo in the first few weeks will determine how well it heals and how vibrant it stays for years to come.
Healing typically takes 2–4 weeks, but your skin will continue to strengthen and settle for months afterward. During that time, your tattoo is vulnerable to infection, fading, and scarring if not cared for properly. Follow these steps to protect your investment and ensure it heals beautifully.
1. Wash Your Hands First 🖐
Always start with clean hands before touching your tattoo — even for a second. Fresh tattoos are essentially open wounds, and bacteria can easily enter and cause infection. Use warm water and antibacterial soap, and dry your hands completely before proceeding.
2. Removing the Bandage 🩹
Your artist will protect your tattoo with a wrap or film right after it’s finished.
Standard Wrap: Remove within a few hours (as directed).
Dermshield/Saniderm: Keep it on for 3–5 days, unless you experience irritation, excessive fluid buildup, or allergic reaction.
When removing the covering, peel it back slowly and gently. Never rip it off quickly — this can damage fresh skin. After removing, always wash the tattoo right away.
3. Gentle Cleaning 💧
Wash your tattoo 1–2 times per day for the first week using fragrance-free antibacterial soap and lukewarm (not hot) water.
Use only your fingertips, never a washcloth or sponge.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel or a lint-free cloth.
Avoid using bathroom towels — they can harbor bacteria even if they look clean.
Cleanliness in these early days is your best defense against infection.
4. Moisturize Regularly 🧴
After cleaning and drying, apply a very thin layer of Holy Grail Tattoo Butter (or an artist-approved ointment).
Apply 2–3 times a day, or whenever the skin feels dry or tight.
Too much ointment can block air circulation and slow healing.
Rub it in gently until it’s absorbed — your tattoo should look slightly shiny, not greasy.
Hydrated skin heals faster and keeps your ink looking rich and even.
5. Avoid Sun, Water, & Heat ☀💦🔥
For the first 2–3 weeks:
Keep your tattoo completely out of direct sunlight — UV rays will fade fresh ink almost instantly.
Avoid pools, lakes, hot tubs, and baths — soaking can pull pigment out and expose your skin to harmful bacteria.
Skip saunas or extended hot showers — excessive steam and heat can soften scabs and damage healing skin.
After healing, always apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) when your tattoo is exposed.
6. Don’t Scratch or Pick 🚫
Itching, peeling, and flaking are normal signs of healing — usually starting around days 4–7.
Never scratch, rub, or pick at the tattoo.
Let scabs fall off naturally.
Scratching can cause patchy spots, scarring, or uneven color.
If the itching is intense, lightly tap the skin or apply a small amount of moisturizer to soothe it.
7. Wear Loose, Breathable Clothing 👕
Tight or abrasive fabrics can rub against your tattoo, trapping moisture and irritating the skin.
Stick to soft cotton or loose, breathable materials.
At night, avoid sleeping directly on your tattoo if possible to reduce friction.
8. Listen to Your Body ❤️
Mild redness, tenderness, and light scabbing are part of normal healing. But watch for warning signs:
Persistent or spreading redness
Excessive swelling
Yellow/green discharge or foul odor
Sharp or worsening pain
If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional immediately.
